Rachel and Kirsty are exploring the tide pools on Rainspell Island’s beach when Kirsty notices something blue moving under a clump of seaweed. It turns out to be a shiny blue crab, which mutters about a fairy in trouble and leads the girls to two different tide pools before finding one that fizzles with blue sparkles, then scuttles away while the girls look for the fairy.

A singing voice from some seaweed turns out to be Sky the Blue Fairy trapped in a large bubble. Before the girls can do anything, the tide pool begins to freeze over, locking the bubble in a sheet of ice. Kirsty suggests looking in the magic bags, but realizes she’s left them on the other end of the beach. Rachel goes to fetch them, retrieving a tiny blue raindrop-shaped stone that glows with heat, which should be able to melt the ice. But by the time she returns to Kirsty at the tide pool, two goblins are skating on the ice despite Kirsty’s attempts to shoo them away. Taking advantage of a moment when the goblins bump into each other, Rachel tosses the raindrop stone onto the center of the pool, which begins melting the ice - the goblins leap away from the heat and run off.

Kirsty fishes Sky out of the pool, but the fairy is quite cold and pale after being so close to the goblins’ icy magic, and she seems very weak. The blue crab returns and calls several other crabs to help. They bring several fluffy seagull feathers, piling them around Sky and reviving her enough to sit up and produce a tiny bit of blueberry-scented fairy dust, but not enough to fly or even stand up. Rachel scoops her up to carry her to the other Rainbow Fairies in the pot in the woods. Amber spies them first, and signals the other three with a burst of her own fairy dust. Sky is happy to see her sisters and Bertram, and meet Queenie and Fluffy, but she isn’t recovering - in fact, she seems a bit transparent. Bertram suggests a spell to save Sky, which the other four fairies worry might not work without all seven of their number. However, their small fairy ring works to completely revive their sister, and a joyful reunion follows.

Sky offers the pile of seagull feathers as cushioning for the shell bed inside the pot, and the fairies begin planning a welcome-home feast, which the girls decline upon remembering there will be a picnic waiting on the beach for them. Sky follows the girls a short way out of the clearing, and they promise her they’ll find her two remaining sisters before their vacation is over.

Trivia[]

  • Her fairy dust/aura is blue stars.
  • She came closest to death than any of the other Rainbow Fairies. Despite this, she shows the most mercy towards Jack Frost in Heather.
  • In the movie Rainbow Magic: Return to Rainspell Island, she is voiced by Emily Dormer.
  • Whenever Sky waves her wand, a shower of sparkling blue stars appears.
  • When fairies form a fairy ring, their magic joins together and becomes very powerful.

Etymology[]

Sky's name comes from what we call the Earth's atmosphere. On a clear day, the sky looks blue because molecules in the air can scatter blue light from the sun more than red light.
