On a rainy day, Rachel and Kirsty are holed up in Rachel’s attic bedroom of Mermaid Cottage. Bored of waiting for the rain to stop, they decide to read from a book of fairytales Kirsty finds. The cover and the ink on some of the pages are glowing indigo, prompting the girls to turn to the Nutcracker story in the middle of the book. Rachel touches an illustration of snowflakes that appear to be moving, and both girls are pulled into the book in a whirl of more snowflakes.

Finding themselves in a snowy forest, the girls worry this might be Jack Frost’s doing, but Rachel discovers the snow is made of icing sugar - puzzling, but not scary. Soft voices and a pink and gold glow lead them to an archway and two elves scooping up the sugar snow nearby. The girls realize they’ve shrunk again when one elf as tall as they are greets them, introducing herself (Wafer) and her sister Cornet as ice cream makers. They’ve heard of the Rainbow Fairies, but Fairyland is far from the Land of Sweets... perhaps the Sugarplum Fairy might be able to help the girls find Izzy (Inky) the Indigo Fairy.

The elves lead the girls through the arch into a village built from various sweets, where the inhabitants complain about everything changing colour. The girls hurry to the lemonade fountain, which has turned indigo and attracted an annoyed crowd with Izzy herself at the centre. She’s surprised but glad to hear that the girls have rescued five of her sisters, and tells them that the wind of Jack Frost’s spell had blown her down Mermaid Cottage’s chimney straight into the fairytale book, where she’s been accidentally turning things indigo ever since. Rachel tells the crowd about the Rainbow Fairies’ plight, and they no longer look angry but wish the girls and Izzy well as they leave in search of the Sugarplum Fairy. Further along, more elves are trying to mine chunks of toffee from a large rock of it, but having a harder time than usual as the stuff seems to be frozen hard.

At that moment, two goblins appear, rolling a big barrel down the street. Everyone jumps out of the way as the barrel hits the toffee rock and bursts, spilling a cloud of lemon sherbet that no one can see through. Izzy calls out that the goblins have her, and Rachel pulls a colourful paper fan from her magic bag to blow away the cloud. They see Izzy with her feet tied together being dragged through a jellybean field by the goblins, and run to catch up. The goblins slow down to pick and eat jellybeans, which gives Rachel an idea. She picks up a basket filled with jellybeans and shows it to the goblins, who begin arguing over who should hold Izzy while the other grabs the beans. Rachel sets the basket down and runs to help Kirsty free Izzy as soon as the goblins let go of her. Just then the Sugarplum Fairy arrives on the back of a big butterfly and scolds the goblins, who ate so many jellybeans they feel sick. As a punishment, she orders the goblins to pick more jellybeans to replace those they ate.

Rachel asks the Sugarplum Fairy for help getting back to Rainspell Island, and the fairy makes the jellybean basket grow big enough to ride in while Izzy blows a huge bubble of gum which the elves help tie to the basket. Rachel uses the magic fan to blow the balloon into the air; it blows through clouds and rushing wind until the girls find themselves back in Rachel’s cottage bedroom in front of the fairytale book with Izzy in Rachel’s pocket. Kirsty expresses disappointment that they didn’t get to taste any sweets, and in answer a pile of jellybeans tumble out of the book. The girls fill their pockets with the beans, planning to bring them to the pot under the willow tree with Izzy.

  • Of the seven Rainbow Fairies books, Izzy's book underwent the most changes when it was published in the US, mostly minor terminology edits for things that might be unfamiliar to American children. Toffee became caramel, Cornet's name was changed to Cone, currants became chocolate chips, and lemon sherbet became cocoa powder.

Etymology[]

Inky's name comes from the liquid called ink. Ink can come in many colours, most popularly dark blue and black.
