It’s a hot, sunny evening, so Kirsty and Rachel are setting up a tent to sleep in Kirsty’s backyard. Mr Tate offers to help, wearing comically large sunglasses and complaining good-naturedly about the week’s strange weather. After he leaves, Rachel looks at her watch and realizes the sun should be lower in the sky than it is. A strange popping sound from beyond the Tates’ hedge gets both girls’ attention, and they discover that the neighboring cornfield is turning into popcorn from the heat. A yellow light flashing through the flying popcorn turns out to be Goldie the Sunshine Fairy, who greets the girls and confirms their suspicions that the Sunshine Feather is somewhere nearby.

Kirsty leads the way along a sun-baked path to the farm on the other side of the cornfield. With Goldie’s magic, they ask the farm animals if they’ve seen a goblin and are told by a duck to ask the pigs. One pig tells Goldie that the farmer added cold water to their mudhole to help keep them cool, but someone else is in the mud and won’t let any pigs use it. Sure enough, there’s a goblin in the mud, singing tunelessly about the Sunshine Feather in his hand. The girls are doubtful they’d be able to take the feather with all the slippery mud in the way, and they step back to make plans without the goblin hearing. Then they hear the goblin snoring. Goldie finds that he’s still holding the feather too tightly not to notice if she were to grab it, and Kirsty comes up with an idea, running back home and soon returning with her dad’s sunglasses and a fishing pole.

Kirsty props the fishing pole against a nearby tree and tells Rachel to join her in the branches as a fairy. She balances the sunglasses on the fishhook and explains she wants to lower them onto the goblin’s face, making him think the Sunshine Feather is broken. Once the glasses are in place, Goldie wakes the goblin with loud crackling sparks of fairy dust, and he starts shaking the Sunshine Feather and becoming increasingly frustrated when it doesn’t appear to work. He tosses the weather over his shoulder where Goldie catches it, but spots the girls turning themselves human and jumps up fast enough to make the sunglasses bounce. Realising the trick, the goblin starts chasing the girls, but Goldie uses the Sunshine Feather to bake and harden the mud coating the goblin so he can’t move. Kirsty retrieves her dad’s sunglasses and the fishing pole and the girls leave, telling the pigs their mudhole is available again. Goldie waves the feather and allows the sun to set properly, although she spares a little extra sunlight to keep the girls warm as they walk back to the tent. When Doodle receives the Sunshine Feather, he adds "Will come" to his warning: "Beware! Jack Frost will come…", reminding the girls to stay vigilant as Goldie returns to Fairyland. Mr. Tate comes outside to say goodnight to the girls, muttering that he thought the weathervane had a smaller tail.

Trivia[]

  • In her book, the sun is so hot that the cornfield next to Kirsty's house starts to turn into popcorn. In real life, the temperature to pop corn is too high for humans to withstand!
  • Goldie really is a little ray of sunshine! She's super-smiley, warmhearted, and full of giggles.
  • The Sunshine Feather's appearance is not described in Goldie's book, but in Hayley we learn that it's copper coloured with golden-yellow spots.
