Rachel and Kirsty are getting ready for an orienteering expedition at camp. A counsellor named Edward hands out maps and compasses and explains how to use them. Their first trial route leads them straight to the camp canteen, where the campers receive water bottles, snacks, and directions for a longer route, which will be a race, through some fields. Rachel is the first to notice the black kitten playing in the grass near them, and Kirsty spies a glimmer of magic around its whiskers. Within a few moments, Rachel’s locket has come off, a bird has stolen Catherine’s snack, and Emma has been stung by a nettle - the kitten’s untrained good-luck magic is working in reverse. It runs off, and Edward divides the campers into pairs (Rachel and Kirsty are paired together), handing each pair an envelope with different instructions for a route.

Kirsty reads the first step aloud, which leads the girls towards a fence. The next time they check the paper, new sparkly writing instructs them to a glowing cluster of buttercups, inside of which is Lara the Black Cat Fairy. She greets the girls, who tell her they’ve seen her cat but aren’t sure where it went, and Rachel spots a four leaf clover at her feet. This turns out to be the first in a trail of shimmering clovers that leads to a farmyard, where Lucky the magic black kitten is playing with some leaves. Lara calls her cat, but two Goblins emerge from haystacks and one of them grabs Lucky. A third haystack carried by a goblin blocks the girls’ path, so Lara turns them into fairies to fly over it. The third goblin chases them towards the barn, while Lucky almost escapes twice when her captors trip and fall. But one goblin manages to bring the kitten inside the barn and shut the door.

Lara and the girls fly around the barn and find a crack in one wall big enough to enter through. The goblin holding Lucky lets his friends in when they knock on the door, warning him about fairies. Kirsty notices a tabby barn cat and gets an idea, which she quickly explains in a whisper. Lara turns the barn cat’s coat black and turns Kirsty and Rachel back into girls, and Kirsty picks up the other cat announcing she’s found an even luckier black cat. Unfortunately, these goblins remember that the girls have tried that kind of trick before, and they begin to run for the door, ducking under the hayloft ladder on the way. Rachel gasps in mock dismay and informs the goblins that by carrying a black cat under a ladder, they’ve made themselves doubly unlucky. She says they’ll need to let go of their black cat to break the bad luck, and Lara adds that there are plenty of good-luck four-leaf clovers outside. This is enough to convince the goblins to hand over Lucky and leave the barn. Lara returns the barn cat and the haystacks to normal and leaves for Fairyland just as Edward and the other campers arrive - it turns out this barn was the orienteering destination and the farmers will be treating the campers to a special lunch.
