Scarlett the Garnet Fairy is the second fairy in the Jewel Fairies series.

Fairy Profile from the Official RM Facebook Page[]

Scarlett teaches Growing and Shrinking Magic to all the other fairies, so they can expand and contract things to any size they like. Her magic wand sends out a beam of glittering red sparkles.
Scarlett is a bit of a practical joker. If you come across a flock of sheep the size of field mice, you'll know she's nearby (do you suppose she might be responsible for the Loch Ness Monster?)

Blurb[]

Scarlett the Garnet Fairy can't make things grow and shrink without her magic jewel. When Rachel and Kirsty find some tiny sheep, they think the garnet must be nearby...

Appearance[]

Scarlett has curly chestnut-coloured hair. She wears a bright red, off-the-shoulder dress with ruffles and flowers bordering the hem and neckline. She also wears red high heels and wears a necklace with a red garnet pendant. Her wings are pointed and red-tinted.

Magic object/Job[]

Job: Scarlett controls the power of growing and shrinking. She also teaches other fairies in Fairyland to do the same.

Object: Garnet.

After a rainy morning, the weather clears and Mrs Walker invites the girls on an errand to Buttercup Farm for fresh vegetables and eggs. Rachel explains to Kirsty on the way that the Walkers’ dog Buttons is good friends with the farm sheepdog Cloud. At the farm, a woman introduces herself to Kirsty as Mrs. Johnson and offers the girls fresh plums. The dogs are greeting each other enthusiastically, so Rachel offers to take them outside. Mrs. Johnson agrees and warns them her husband is in a bad mood because his new tractor has disappeared.

The girls follow the dogs into the meadow, and Cloud almost immediately brings them a small toy tractor. Kirsty jokingly suggests giving it to Mr. Johnson, but they decide to leave it somewhere its owner can find it instead. Kirsty spots what look like shiny brown rocks under a chestnut tree, which turn out to be chestnuts the size of footballs. Buttons then alerts them to a flock of tiny sheep the size of mice, which leads both girls to conclude that a magical jewel is nearby. They leash the dogs to the fence so the sheep don’t get stepped on and look around to see Scarlett the Garnet Fairy floating towards them on a drifting chestnut leaf.

Kirsty remembers right away that the magic garnet powers growing and shrinking magic. Scarlett doesn’t have enough size magic to change everything back, so she and the girls split up to look for the jewel. Kirsty and Rachel are walking past a haystack when they begin to shrink - soon they’re fairy size but without wings. Spying a red glow at the top of the haystack, they climb up after realising Scarlett can’t hear them at this size. Kirsty nearly falls, but both girls reach the garnet without further incident. Since Scarlett still can’t hear them, they turn the garnet so its red light shines on the fairy and alerts her - unfortunately the light also hits a scarecrow that turns out to be two goblins in disguise. Scarlett and the two goblins hurry towards the haystack just as the girls begin to grow back to normal size, sliding slowly down the side of the haystack. One goblin has almost reached the garnet, so Rachel tosses it to Scarlett. The fairy catches the gem but can’t stay in the air with it - Kirsty catches Scarlett’s wand as she drops it, but Scarlett and the garnet land in the goblins’ scarecrow hat and one goblin holds the opening shut so she can’t escape.

Kirsty suggests letting Cloud and Buttons off their leashes, something both dogs are enthusiastic about. They chase the goblins to the wooden scarecrow stand and run around it barking while the goblins try to climb out of reach. Kirsty and Rachel agree to hold back the dogs if the goblin holding the hat will let Scarlett free, and he grudgingly complies. Before anyone can figure out what to do next, the goblin with the hat begins to shrink by the power of the garnet. This sets the scarecrow stand off balance, and the bigger goblin falls off where both dogs begin playfully licking him. Kirsty takes the garnet from the tiny goblin and gives it back to Scarlett, who recharges her wand and turns everything on the farm back to normal size. Cloud and Buttons are confused to see sheep growing out of the grass in front of them, while the girls discover the toy tractor they found earlier was actually Mr. Johnson’s real tractor, now full-sized again. The goblins, both the same size now, stomp away arguing as Scarlett takes the garnet back to Fairyland. Both girls return to the farmhouse in search of more fresh plums.
