Rachel and Kirsty are visiting the village of Leafley near Blossom Hall. According to a sign outside the Visitor’s Centre, the village is famous for its early-blooming sunflowers, but the girls wonder if any will be in bloom with the magic Sunflower Petal still missing. A woman named Laura greets the girls inside the building, handing them sunflower-shaped badges while she talks about the Best-Kept Village Award judges who will be touring Leafley later that day. A map on the wall shows the “Sunflower Trail”, a looping route through the village that shows off the best of the village’s sunflowers. The girls get permission to follow the trail while their parents have tea in the adjacent cafe.
Laura hands Rachel a village map in an envelope, and the girls go outside, following the route to a row of houses with small flower gardens, each with a few droopy sunflowers. Rachel opens the envelope and finds Charlie the Sunflower Fairy inside, who says she knows the magic Sunflower Petal is in Leafley somewhere before hiding behind Kirsty’s badge as some children pass by. One cottage on Sunny Cottage Row seems to have a few more sunflowers than the others, but on closer inspection the extra flowers turn out to be goblins wearing yellow petal headdresses around their faces.
Charlie turns the girls into fairies and the three sneak into the garden as the nearest goblin calls out that the street is empty so they can look for the sunflower petal unseen. Rachel sees the shiny yellow petal on a nearby sunflower first and signals Charlie and Kirsty, but a goblin notices and pulls the stem of the flower down so he can take the petal. He yells for help as he runs away, and another goblin waves the wand Jack Frost gave them and sends bolts of ice magic at the girls. One hits Rachel, coating her in ice so she can’t fly. Charlie makes the nearest sunflower bend over to catch her and hold her safely as the spell slowly wears off, then turns the girls into humans once Rachel can move again.
Further along the trail in the same direction the goblins went is Leafley School, decorated with a large paper collage of sunflowers and closed for the spring holidays. Next is the Sunflower Field, which is mostly full of wilting flowers and closed buds, but the girls and Charlie realise they can see where in the field the goblins are hiding by which sunflowers look healthy enough to be near the petal. It seems the goblins are lost in the field and running in circles. At Rachel’s suggestion, Charlie creates two sparkly paper petals like the ones at the school, and Rachel offers them in trade for the single petal the goblins hold. The goblins follow her voice to the edge of the field and, after some debate, accept the trade. Charlie hurries to Fairyland with her petal, thanking the girls as she leaves, before the goblins realize their mistake.
As the girls walk the rest of the Sunflower Trail back to the Visitors’ Centre, every sunflower they see stands up straight in full bloom. The girls even glimpse the impressed judges for the Best-Kept Village award on their way back.

The little fairy hovered in the air, shaking out her crumpled wings and straightening her blue trousers and matching top
“Hurry, girls!” Charlotte called, her wings beating faster than ever
“It’s a shame,” Charlie sighed, peeping out from behind Kirsty’s badge
“Look out!” yelled Charlie, turning a somersault in the air as the ice bolt whizzed underneath her
“Oh, I can’t bear it!” Charlotte gasped, covering her eyes with her hands
Charlie led the girls behind a large bush and put a finger to her lips
Charlie twirled excitedly up into the air
Charlie’s face fell and her wings drooped. “Not yet,” she said sadly
Charlie, Rachel and Kirsty looked at each other in horror
Quickly, Charlie whizzed out from behind the bush, her thin, gauzy wings a blur as she raced towards her precious petal
Carefully, Rachel pulled the envelope open, and immediately Charlie the Sunflower Fairy danced out, waving her wand and smiling happily at the girls!
