The girls have been sent on a scavenger hunt to find and photograph a list of birds. They just need to find a bluetit, so Rachel looks around through binoculars. Seeing a robin, she comes up with a joke about Robin Hood, which sets both girls laughing and coming up with more bird jokes. Kirsty is the first to notice an orange and yellow bird on a branch above them, which they quickly realise is the missing magic firebird from Fairyland. They follow it to the bank of a stream, where Rachel notices their bird guidebook is shimmering with magic. On the sparkling page is a picture of Erin the Firebird Fairy and some facts about her - the picture jumps out of the book to become the real Erin, who immediately tells them a joke.
Giggles the firebird’s magic must be malfunctioning, though, because neither girl finds the joke funny. Erin is about to call him when two boys come running out of the woods, scaring Giggles up into a tree. Their scavenger hunt is a list of butterflies, and one of them mistook Erin for a butterfly at a distance and wants to know which way she went. Rachel says they’ve been too busy looking for birds to notice any butterflies, and Erin stealthily sends some fairy dust upstream that looks like a butterfly, distracting the boys and getting them out of the way. But by then, Giggles has flown away. Looking for him, the girls notice some Goblins in camouflage-print clothes at the top of the bird-watching tower among the trees. They look excited, and Erin realises they’ve seen Giggles perched on a log nearby.
The goblins hurry down from the tower, and Erin turns the girls into fairies to have a chance at catching up. But it’s so tricky to fly while dodging branches and birds that the goblins reach Giggles first and capture him in a net. Rachel suggests telling the goblins jokes - with Giggles to amplify their humour, the goblins might be made helpless with laughter - and Erin turns them human so they can without getting grabbed.
Rachel’s first joke about Jack Frost’s breakfast doesn’t work, but Kirsty’s pun about a cross between Jack Frost and a vampire being called “frost bite” makes some of the goblins chuckle. The girls tell one more ice-themed joke each before finishing with “How do you keep a goblin in suspense? We’ll tell you tomorrow”, which has all the goblins rolling around on the ground laughing. Quickly, Rachel and Kirsty lift the net and Giggles flies out from under it to greet Erin. She’s able to escape with him to Fairyland without the goblins even noticing, and the girls see the last bird they’re looking for on the way back to camp.Trivia[]
- On the front cover, Giggles the firebird/phoenix is perched on Erin's hand.
- Her Swedish name is Frida.
- Her Greek name is Πλουμίτσα (Ploumitsa).
- The US version changes the bluetit to a chickadee and includes a pun about Phoenix, Arizona.
