Shortly after their vacation to Rainspell Island, Kirsty Tate asks her mother if Rachel Walker, her friend she met on the island, can come visit. A sudden and brief snow shower interrupts their talk and Kirsty’s father repairing their barn’s roof, startling all of them. Inside, Kirsty notices a rusty rooster-shaped weathervane on the table - Mr. Tate had found it in the park and planned to install it on top of the barn. The summer snow and some sparkles from the weathervane make Kirsty wonder about magic, so she runs to her room to find her fairy dust snow globe swirling as if it had been shaken. She tries to pick it up, but the glass is so hot she drops it, breaking the globe and sending fairy dust around the room. Suddenly she begins to shrink and is soon turned into a fairy and swept out the window by a magical breeze.

This takes her straight to Fairyland, where she lands in front of the fairy king and queen, seven fairies she hasn’t seen before, and Rachel as a fairy, who got summoned to Fairyland the same way. Queen Titania apologises for the abrupt call and explains that Jack Frost has been causing more trouble, this time with Doodle, Fairyland’s weathervane rooster. She shows the girls pictures in a golden pond of Doodle deciding the day’s weather and lending the Weather Fairies his magic tail feathers, telling them Jack Frost helps Doodle with cold weather but gets bored in the summertime. In the picture, seven goblins appear - each takes a feather and escapes. According to the king and queen, Doodle followed the goblins to the human world but turned into a regular weathervane without his magic. The fairies don’t know exactly where they went, but they know it’s somewhere in a village that Kirsty identifies as her hometown of Wetherbury, meaning Doodle must be the weathervane her dad found. Kirsty asks Rachel to visit and help find the feathers, and the queen gives each girl a locket of fairy dust to turn into fairies whenever they need, while warning them that Jack Frost has enchanted the goblins to be closer to human size. She sends both girls home with a bit more fairy dust.

The next day, Rachel arrives in the middle of a sizeable snowstorm. Kirsty shows her Doodle, stored in the hall closet, then notices her mother talking to her friend Mrs. Fordham, who reports so much snow on the hill where she lives that she can’t get home. The girls conclude the Snow Feather must be somewhere on that hill, and ask permission to go out and play. Outside, Crystal the Snow Fairy greets them sliding down the drainpipe and hides in Rachel’s scarf as they walk through town. At the foot of the hill, the snow makes it hard to walk, so the girls turn themselves into fairies to fly the rest of the way. Chimney smoke from Mrs. Fordham’s house surprises Kirsty, as the old woman lives alone, and it turns out to be a goblin in her living room, holding the white-spotted Snow Feather. He sneezes, producing a scattering of ice cubes, and complains about his cold feet, giving Kirsty an idea. She, Rachel, and Crystal fly back to Kirsty’s house where Kirsty, turned human size, sneaks inside and wraps up a pair of slippers her dad had decided to get rid of. Rachel and Crystal hide in the box, which Kirsty carries back to Mrs. Fordham’s and delivers to the grouchy goblin. She watches through a window as he opens the box, puts on the slippers, and falls asleep by the fireplace. Crystal takes the feather and turns Rachel human sized to open the window, which causes a cold draft and wakes the goblin. Kirsty pulls Rachel out the window after Crystal, with the goblin following close behind. He tries to give chase but trips over the slippers and tumbles down the hill, engulfed in a growing snowball.

Crystal clears away all the snow with a wave of the feather and the girls return to Kirsty’s house to find that Mr. Tate has installed Doodle on top of the barn. Crystal returns the Snow Feather to its place on his tail, and the rooster briefly animates to squawk “Beware” before turning to metal again. The girls say goodbye to Crystal and resolve to find the rest of the feathers and hear the rest of the message in the coming week.
